Historical Industries
and Services of Hudson, Quebec
(1841-2004)

by
Roderick L. Hodgson,
Martin R. Hofton,
Margaret A. Peyton
and Daniel Vigneault

This 179 page book is a collection of five short historical studies on the Ottawa River Navigation Company, The Hudson Water Works Department, the Hudson Police Department, the Hodgson Brothers Sawmill and The Hudson Hosiery Factory.

It includes scores of historical photos dating back to the middle to late 1800s, especially of the huge steam paddle wheelers that plied the Ottawa River between Montreal and Ottawa.

The complete history of the Hudson Police Department is included from its formation in 1932 until its demise in 2002. Classic photos of old uniforms, the Police Officers in old style uniforms make an interesting contrast to the modern uniforms of the Sureté du Quebec.

The book also covers the early formation of a municipal water system with information on the original wooden water mains. One of the most interesting stories is the one about Hudson’s last industry, the Hudson Hosiery Factory. It was a centrally located knitting mill that employed hundreds of local residents over it long stay in Hudson.
