Fire Safety Tips

Fire Safety Tips: Remember our Emergency number is 458-5311. A very important note is that 911 DOES NOT work here in Hudson. Use only 458-5311 for Emergencies!

Always have a working smoke alarm on each floor of your home or commerce. If possible try to link up with a 24 hour alarm monitoring company. Verify your smoke detectors each month and change the batteries at least once a year, more often if needed. If you have a large house more detectors may be needed.

Arrange a home escape plan with your family, lay it out paper, discuss the plan then practice it a couple of times per year. Practice E.D.I.T.H., which stands for Exit Drills in the Home!

Purchase a couple of ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers for your home. One in the kitchen and one near the furnace room are two good places to have them. A fire extinguisher in your car or truck is an important addition also. A 1 kg dry chemical extinguisher is about the right size to have.

When you go away on a holiday always have someone verify your house at least once a day. Notify the Hudson Police also as they will pass by each day to check the house.

If your home has an alternate heat source such as a fireplace or woodburning stove make sure that you have the chimneys cleaned at least twice a year depending on how often you use them. Always be sure that your stove pipes are of the proper type and are screwed together. Verify the clearances for the stove installations with the plaque on the back of the stove or call us at 458-4011 for more information. Always purchase a ULC or CSA approved stove.

If your clothes catch on fire be sure to STOP, DROP & ROLL. Stop your walking or running, drop to the ground and roll to smother the flames. Cover your face with your arms or hands while doing the last step.
